Effective treatment for warts, verruca and fungal nail infections

Treatment for Warts and Verruca now available at Bristol Skin Clinic Bristol using our amazing Motus AY Nd: YAG therapy.

Warts and Verruca affects around three in every hundred people, caused by fungus, bacteria and viruses.

Fungal Nail infection is very common and seems to affect women more than men as women have treatments on their nails with gel polish and acrylics that can prevent sufficient air getting to the nail so it cannot breathe. Lifting of products on the nail surface can sometimes result in trapped moisture which can make the nail prone to infection as a moist warm environment is a perfect breeding ground for a fungal nail infection.  Toe nails are particularly susceptible, as the condition worsens in enclosed shoes or trainers.

The condition is characterised by nail discolouration, thickening of the nail, splitting or lifting of the nail and can sometimes be painful.

Treatment

Lasers have become a new modality of treatment using the principle of selective photo thermolysis. Fungi are heat sensitive above 55 °C therefore, once heated this causes the molecules within the pathogen to die, killing off the fungal infection. Other methods can be used but the infection has a high relapse rate, therefore our laser treatment offers the best method to eradicate the infection for good.

How many treatments will I need?

A minimum of 3 treatments and up to 6 will be required with a 2-4 week interval to achieve optimal results.

Warts and verrucae are small lumps on the skin that most people have at some point in their life.  About one in ten people in the UK have warts at any one time, caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV); they usually go away on their own but can take years (5-10 years in adults.)  Different types of warts are usually common on palms, knuckles, knees and fingers but Verruca’s generally appear on the foot. They may look different but they are essentially the same.

Warts aren’t harmful but can be overgrown, itchy and embarrassing and verrucae can become painful as they grow inwards and root down due to standing on our feet a lot. They can also spread to other people from contaminated surfaces or through close skin contact, for example a swimming pool, where people move around with bare feet.  If someone has HPV virus they are prone to reoccurrence of warts/verruca.

Treatment

HPV virus has been shown to respond better to treatment with heat than cryotherapy (freezing) Our Motus AY Nd:YAG laser emits 1064nm of energy to cause photo thermal destruction and the light energy targets the blood supply feeding the wart as well as destroying the DNA of the virus.

How many treatments will I need?

As each individual responds differently to treatment it can take 1-4 treatments with a two week interval to achieve optimal results.
